Admiral Lord George Anson (1697-1762)
Admiral Lord George Anson

(1697-1762)

Admiral of the Fleet George Anson was a British admiral and a wealthy aristocrat, noted for his circumnavigation of the globe and his role overseeing the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War. He had entered the navy in 1712 and had advanced rapidly partly due to having the right connections but probably mainly due to merit. During his naval career he fought in lots of sea battles and made a name for himself. In 1739 he set off on a voyage to around the world, harassing Spanish ships as he went. Before returning home in 1744 he had managed to capture an enemy ship full of gold. This made him very wealthy and he was able to rebuild Shugborough Hall, the family estate.

Anson became the Member of Parliament for Hedon in Yorkshire from 1744 to 1747. He took command of the Channel Fleet in 1746 and the following year he commanded the fleet that defeated the French Admiral de la Jonquiere at the First Battle of Cape Finisterre. He was then promoted to Vice Admiral and elevated to the peerage as Lord Anson, Baron of Soberton, in the County of Southampton.

Anson had also joined the Admiralty Board in December 1744 working for the First Lord of the Admiralty John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford. His colleague the Earl of Sandwich was the next person to be First Lord of the Admiralty and then in June of 1751 Anson became First Lord of the Admiralty. He held this position until November of 1756, and again from June 1757 until his death in 1762. Among his reforms were the transfer of the Marines from Army to Navy authority, uniforms for commissioned officers, devising a way to effectively get superannuated Captains and Admirals to retire on half-pay, and submitting a revision of the Articles of War to Parliament – which tightened discipline throughout the Navy.

PLATE XXVI

A Chart of the Channel in the Philippine Islands through which the Manila Galleon passes together with the adjacent islands

George, Lord Anson (1697-1762) was First Lord of the Admiralty between 1754 and 1756. Anson's famous voyage in Centurion between 1740 and 1744, is one of the finest records of the sea. Initially Anson's mission was to harass Spanish shipping along the coast of South America and intercept Spanish galleons bound for Manila. After the outbreak of the War of the Austrian Succession, Anson was placed in charge of a squadron of six ships and instructed to sail to Manila and capture the Spanish colony.
Anson decided to cruise around the Philippines in the hope of intercepting Spanish treasure galleons. He charted the Philippine Islands during this period.
On 20th June 1742, while cruising off the Philippines in the hope of intercepting Spanish treasure ships, HMS Centurion attacked and overpowered Nuestra Senora de CovadongaCovadonga was commissioned into Anson's fleet, sailed into Canton, and sold., This was the greatest treasure ship ever captured by the British Navy.

Because it was considered such an important map it is a large image, with folds to accommodate inclusion in a smaller publication

A Chart of the Pacific Ocean from the Equinoctial to the Latitude of 39 1/2 No.
A Voyage of Round the World in the Years 1740, 1741, 1742, 1743 and 1744
By GEORGE ANSON, Esq
PLATE XLL

A Chart of the Pacific Ocean from the Equinoctial to the Latitude of 39 1/2 No.

This is a rather abnormal sea chart of part of the Pacific displaying the routes of Spanish galleons between Acapulco and the Philippines. The tracks of the Spanish Nostra Seigniora de Cabadonga as well as the British Navy Commodore George Anson are also shown. A crude and rather theoretical depiction of Japan is shown in the top left opposite the coast of a portion of California. The Hawaiian Islands have yet to be mapped as this chart predates their discovery by James Cook by about 30 years.

This particular chart was part of A Voyage Round the World, which recounts Commodore George Anson’s circumnavigation of the planet. Circumnavigating the world however was not the original mission of George Anson. In 1740 while England was at war with Spain, Anson set sail in a squadron composed of eight ships and 1,854 men with the intent to attack Spanish possessions and interest along the Pacific coast of South America. Unfortunately for Anson, by the time he reached Juan Fernandes, his squadron had been reduced to only three ships and 335 men. After recuperating on land, he set sail across the Pacific in search of one of the Spanish galleons filled with riches from trade between Mexico and the Philippines. On June 20, 1743, his voyage was graced with success as he managed to seize the Nuestra Señora de Cabadonga off Cape Espiritu Santo in the Philippines. Anson then concluded his voyage by sailing through the Indian Ocean around southern Africa and northwards up the Atlantic back to England. The voyage that began in 1740 with 1,854 men concluded in 1744 with only 188 men. At least they were rich.
